From Publishers Weekly
In this retelling of The Three Little Pigs set in the American Southwest, the cherished porkers are transformed into javelinas, the hairy, swinelike creatures also known as peccaries. Their pursuer, no longer the wolf of traditional lore, becomes Coyote, that ubiquitous Southwestern trickster. In her first book for children, Lowell spices the story with elements of Native American, Mexican and Old West culture. Javelina No. 1 builds his house of tumbleweed, while his brother relies on saguaro ribs. Twice Coyote huffs and puffs and the lightweight dwellings fall, but the peccaries are saved by their resourceful sister, who has had the foresight to build her home of stout adobe bricks. This clever and flavorful change of scene puts a diverting spin on an old favorite. Harris's lively, finely detailed illustrations, with the bristling, pink-nosed peccaries clad in cowboy outfits, amusingly contrast the villain's vigorous wiles with the title characters' cozy domesticity. Sprightly fun. Ages 3-8. Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

It was bought for an ex 3rd grade public school teacher who has a collection of children's books in her home. She was brought up in Minnesota and has read about javelinas. We were in Prescott, Arizona together this February and she really wanted a sighting of a javelina as our host said they are active in their yard--often messing up the garbage cans. Unfortunately, we didn't see one, so I, her sister-in-law bought the book for her collection. It's adorable. I especially like the English-Spanish version as I read and speak Spanish. The art work is unusual! Marjorie Ramgren
As a teacher and a parent of a girl, I read a lot of books that are different versions of classic stories. This helps children see different points of view and be more creative later.
We live in a desert environment and he loved that the scenery was familiar. He was proud of learning the word "javelina" and liked the parallel to the traditional three little pigs story. Most books don't hold his interest for long, but this book has become a favorite. I also enjoy reading it and I hope that when he is older we can read the Spanish words together. I'd recommend this for a change for the adult who has to read the book over and over as well as the introduction of a different setting for kids that may have a little trouble relating to books.
Always a winner, this is a book I have given to many children over the years; it's a great re-telling of "The Three Little Pigs" story from the viewpoint of people living in the Southwest (AZ or NM), and I've received good feedback from the young recipients. I think children aged 5-7 are perhaps the ideal age to enjoy the book, but there is flexibility here.
A classroom favorite. The children in my classroom have been interested in the story of the Three Little Pigs, introduced this book as a provocation to their interest and they loved it.
Found this at the library and thought my 7 year old granddaughter would love it since she is enrolled in Spanish immersion. Although not written in Spanish it is based in the south with a little Latin flavor. Both the 5 and 7 year olds love it as do I. Nicely illustrated and a cute little twist on Three Little pigs.
If you live in the Southwest, then this is a MUST for children of all ages. It is a delightful take on The Three Little Pigs and the illustrations are priceless. Very good! It is getting harder and harder to find it in Hardcover however. We purchase this book every time we are invited to a child's birthday party or, a shower. We bought it for the first time over a decade ago and we recently sent a copy to friends in Romania. Now, they can enjoy some Southwest humor.
This book made an impression on me as a child when my teacher read this to us in grade school. Now that I am a teacher myself teaching a desert unit I knew I HAD to have this book (along with Cactus Hotel). It's better than I remembered! The classic story is a classic for a reason, kids love it! It keeps them entertained and this book uses everything from the desert to tell the story in the process. Love the use of tumbleweeds, saguaro ribs and adobe bricks, so creative!
